Workers in this unit group plan and carry out the necessary operations to grow and harvest vegetable, field legumes and root crops for sale or delivery on a regular basis to wholesale buyers, marketing organizations or at markets. Their tasks include: a) determining the kinds and amounts of vegetables, field legumes and root crops to be grown; b) purchasing seeds, fertilizer and other supplies; c) renting or investing in land and land improvements buildings, working animals, equipment and machinery; d) performing farm operations such as land preparation, sowing, planting, cultivating and harvesting vegetables, legumes and fiber crops; e) storing and carrying out some basic processing of vegetables, legumes and root crops; f) tending working animals and maintaining farm buildings, machinery and equipment; g) delivering or marketing farm products.
